Asking questions about Gladys Liu and her past is not racist – Politics

Posted September 13, 2019 06:30:55 Photo: Legitimate and important questions have been raised about Gladys Liu. (ABC News: Ian Cutmore) What’s the betting that when Scott Morrison and Donald Trump are exchanging views on China in Washington in a week or so, the President might be curious about Gladys Liu? If he is, the Prime Minister will no doubt have some flattering words about the first Chinese-born federal parliamentarian, who is now Liberal MP for the marginal Melbourne seat of Chisholm. He might be more reluctant to admit that Ms…

US biologists eye unusual deaths of Alaska seals

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — U.S. marine mammal biologists have declared an “unusual mortality event” in the deaths of nearly 300 ice seals off Alaska’s northwest coast. The cause of the deaths is not known. The fisheries arm of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says the declaration covers ringed, bearded and spotted seals. All three types of seals use sea ice in varying ways. NOAA Fisheries has received reports of 282 dead seals in the Bering and Chukchi seas since June 1, 2018. That’s nearly five times the average number…

China-Vietnam Maritime Standoff: 3 Scenarios for the Next Stage | Voice of America

CLARK FIELD, PHILIPPINES – A standoff between Chinese and Vietnamese vessels in the South China Sea has intensified with the return this month of China’s oil survey boat – followed by a reprimand from U.S. natural security adviser John Bolton. While Sino-Vietnamese spats regarding the disputed sea have surfaced regularly since the 1970s, this one is lasting longer and with little of the problem-solving diplomacy that often follows an upset. The standoff began in June when a Chinese energy survey ship, the Haiyang Dizhi 8, began patrolling waters near Vanguard…

Chinese Ships Must Leave Vietnamese Waters, Hanoi Again Demands

Vietnam renewed calls on China on Thursday to withdraw from waters claimed by Vietnam, saying that the continued presence of the Chinese oil survey ship Haiyang Dizhi 8 and escort vessels in Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) violates Vietnam’s sovereign territory. China’s intrusions into Vietnam’s EEZ challenge Vietnam’s jurisdiction and threaten peace and stability in the area, foreign ministry spokeswoman Le Thi Thu Hang said, according to a Sept. 12 report by Vietnam’s online VN Express news service. “For all these reasons, Vietnam demands that China immediately stop this activity…

Missile vs Missile: Would China or America Win a Showdown in the Pacific

“The Chinese carried out the first test over the weekend, firing off at least one missile into the sea,” NBC News reported on July 1, 2019, citing a U.S. official with knowledge of the test. The Chinese military lobbed anti-ship ballistic missiles into the South China Sea in tests in early July 2019. The missile trials underscored Beijing’s increasing militarization of resource-rich waters on which several countries have conflicting claims. (This first appeared earlier in July 2019.) “The Chinese carried out the first test over the weekend, firing off at…

US Navy ship is carrying a powerful new missile near South China Sea

The USS Gabrielle Giffords is carrying a powerful new missile to help U.S. forces in the Pacific region, a disputed region of the world over which China wants to control. According to Raytheon, the primary contract for the new Naval Strike Missiles, the weapons system is designed to skim over the sea, making it difficult to spot on radar. It is also…

Taiwan, Malaysia and Brunei also have competing claims in the South China Sea.
