A Hypothetical Scenario in the China Sea

It is generally known that the modern world has a great interest in the East Asia region, were some of the greatest super powers in terms of economy, strength, population, and military capabilities, are focused.  For instance, Japan is a technological and economic giant, and at the same time it is a close ally to the United States since the end of World War II. It may not be a nuclear power, but no analyst can seriously underestimate the ability of the country’s Self-Defense Forces. Across the Chinese Sea, lies…

China is vowing strict enforcement of its annual summer fishing ban in parts of the contested South China Sea. The ban began Friday and is likely to be opposed by other claimant nations. The three-and-a-half-month ban, aimed at conserving fish stocks, extends into an area of the South China Sea up to the 12th parallel. That means China demands foreign fishing vessels not participate in any activities in and around the Paracel Islands and Scarborough Shoal – parts of the South China Sea that Vietnam and the Philippines also claim.…

China muscle-flexing in troubled waters

At a time when the world is preoccupied with tackling the Covid-19 pandemic, China is pushing its territorial claims over Taiwan and the South China Sea in an increasingly belligerent manner. Not only has it been repeatedly sending military flotillas — some of them were led by its aircraft carrier — through the Taiwan Straits but also, in March, it sent warplanes across the median line of this waterway. Beijing claims Taiwan to be part of China. Although the median line is only an unofficial boundary, it has generally been…

The U.S.-Philippines Visiting Forces Agreement Isn’t Dead Yet

On Feb. 11, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte announced that Manila would be terminating the U.S.-Philippines Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA)—an agreement authorizing, among other things, the U.S. military to have freedom of movement into and within the Philippines. Duterte’s decision was met in Washington with deep concerns about the potential fallout for the Indo-Pacific strategy, largely aimed at countering China’s growing assertiveness. They were right to be worried. After all, bases across the Philippines—namely Subic Bay Naval Base, Basa Air Base, Fort Magsaysay, Antonio Bautista Air Base, Mactan-Benito Ebuen Air Base,…

China’s military expels US Navy warship from South China Sea

China’s military banished a “provocative” US Navy destroyer from the South China Sea this week amid escalating tensions in the region — with the Communist country also expected to squash more pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong. The Chinese People’s Liberation Army said the Navy vessel had been expelled from the oil-rich stretch of water after entering Chinese waters, and called on the US to instead focus on its “national epidemic situation,” referring to the coronavirus crisis — which originated in China. “The provocative actions of the United States seriously violated…
