What’s in a name? | Inquirer Opinion

China recently gave names to 80 geologic features in the Spratlys and the Paracels. Twenty-five of these features are above water at high tide, while 55 are undersea features. The high tide features are entitled to 12 NM territorial seas. Undersea features beyond the territorial seas are measurable reliefs on the ocean floor, like mounts or ridges, forming part of either the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) or extended continental shelf (ECS) of a costal state. As ruled by the arbitral tribunal at The Hague, all the high-tide features in the…

Trump’s ‘Uncreative Destruction’ of the U.S.-China Relationship

Shutterstock Economists like to think of the wreckage caused by stock market downturns, widespread bankruptcies, and corporate downsizing as “creative destruction.” As it destroys the old and the dysfunctional, the capitalist system continually spurs innovation, much as a forest fire prepares the ground for new growth. Or so the representatives of the dismal science argue. Donald Trump, who is neither economist nor scientist, has his own version of creative destruction. He is determined to destroy the Affordable Care Act and replace it with his own health insurance alternative. He has…

posted May 20, 2020 at 10:40 pm by  Ray S. Eñano The COVID-19 pandemic has diverted the attention of members of the Southeast Asian Nations away from the contentious West Philippine Sea. It is not so with China, which has taken advantage of the relative tranquility. Vietnam, the chairman of the 2020 Association of Southeast Nations (ASEAN), ironically saw China’s persistent aggression in the disputed waters firsthand. It is, thus, no surprising for Vietnam to fume over the repeated incursions of China into the West Philippine Sea given ASEAN’s responsibility to sustain…

China has milked the trade system

The world has 5 million people infected with COVID-19 and 320,000 dead, due in large part to China’s month-long delay in telling the WHO that there was a person-to-person transmittable disease in Wuhan. The world, led by Australia, has every right to ask for an inquiry into the mistakes that played out in China. For China to bully and blackmail Australia to back off the inquiry magnifies the crime. And for Victorian Treasurer Tim Pallas to suggest that Australia had vilified China weakens Australia’s position in regard to what is the…
