China is “waging a war against the West – and winning”, a former UK defence minister has warned.
Tobias Ellwood, who served in Theresa May’s government between 2017 and 2019, warned American dominance was “under threat”.
Writing in the Mail on Sunday, the MP highlighted the rise in homegrown Chinese tech giants, the country’s rapid economic growth and the threat of its increasing military capabilities.
“China makes no secret of its ambition to secure global dominance in automation, artificial intelligence and digital technology,” he wrote.
“And if it succeeds in harnessing the next big tech jump, quantum computing, then the show is over.”
Mr Ellwood also claimed the “rules of the old world order” are now “out of date”.
“The vast scale of technological advance has outstripped them and they must be renegotiated…
“The old world order is falling apart and our politicians need to build a new one. Fast.”
The warning comes just weeks after China threatened military action against the UK if its warships went near a set of disputed islands.
HMS Queen Elizabeth is set to carry US military aircraft to the Spratly Islands, currently controlled by China, in 2021.
However, the Beijing regime has dubbed the move a “hostile action”, with China’s ambassador to the UK, Liu Xiaming, saying Britain “should not do this dirty job for somebody else”.
